Rise of the Runelords
Situated along the Lost Coast road where it crosses the Turandarok River, the village of Sandpoint has blossomed in the half century since its founding. The town offers a variety of services to adventures and scholars who stop on their way to or from the numerous ruins that are found throughout Varisia. Sandpoint enjoys a very low crime rate and its remote location makes it an unlikely target for raiders and bandits. This peaceful atmosphere has made it an attractive destination for merchants wishing to enter a new market and nobles wishing to escape the bustle of Magnimar.
Sandpoint is not without its share of troubles however. Several years ago the town endured a massive fire that began at the chapel and spread to several of the neighboring buildings. Many of the buildings in northern Sandpoint were destroyed, including the chapel. The former head cleric of the chapel, Ezakien Tobyn, and his adopted daughter were both killed in the fire. Ezakien was well loved by the people and his death and the loss of the chapel was a heavy blow for the town. Eager to put the minds of the townspeople at ease the mayor of Sandpoint, Kendra Deverin, along with the new head cleric, Abstalar Zantus, laid plans for a new grand cathedral to be built over the foundations of the old chapel. The construction of the new Cathedral was finished earlier this year and a consecration ceremony is scheduled as part of the upcoming Swallowtail Festival.
Aside from the newly constructed cathedral the first thing visitors to Sandpoint will see is the crumbling ruin of an ancient tower. The tower rises over 100 feet from the water and towers over the bluff that holds the northern part of Sandpoint. With the top portion of the tower long since crumbled to dust it is difficult to know the structure’s original purpose. However, inscriptions on the base that mention light and its proximity to the sea make a lighthouse the most likely explanation.
